RS stands for Round Shader; these are needles used for shading. The needle tips are organized in a circle, but not as tight (loose round formation) as the round liners. Round shaders can be used for thicker lines, color fills and simple shading. The larger the area to be processed, the larger needle sizes are used. 9RS means this shader has nine pins soldered to the tip of the rod.

Shaders are commonly used for: Japanese, geometric, tribal, Samoan, traditional and neo-traditional motifs, some lines, type and letters, basic shading and color fills. They are often used for soft lines or pale layers.
